Yes, vintage American cars show up on virtually every website post or magazine article on Havana. But those are for tourists, and there are many more options for travelers interested in going beyond the obvious. Havana’s best experiences aren’t expensive. From hanging out on the Malecón with families and fishermen to learning about the city’s history at Havana’s most famous graveyard, there’s plenty to occupy your time whether you’re in the capital for a day or three.

Sure, you’ll want to do some of the touristy things, too, like riding in one of those shiny old convertibles or downing a daiquiri at one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite haunts. But be sure to wander through Centro, too. Located just next to spiffed up Habana Vieja (Old Havana), now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Centro is a decaying neighborhood full of life. Truth be told, an evening sitting outside a paladare, nursing a Cuban Bucanero beer while watching the never-ending parade of life, turned out to be my favorite night in the city.
