Travel Awaits put out its recommendations of places to go in 2019. When they asked for my personal favorite, I said Portugal. It would be hard to say what I liked most about it–scenery, the people, the food, the unexpected workout climbing hills, the medieval towns and fortresses. I fell in love with Porto, was impressed by Sintra’s sheer volume of palaces and villas, and was entranced by the walled city of Obidos in the evening when the tourists left.
Of Travel Awaits’ 6 Places You Have to Visit in 2019, I’ve also been to four others on the list: Ecuador, Cuba, the Philippines, and India. That leaves Vietnam. Maybe somewhere down the road.
